Reporting

Sooner or later every owner asks what they're paying for. The Reports screen answers with what Google itself recorded about your profile, and a short email each month lists what was actually done.

What it does

The Reports screen reads your profile's performance straight from Google: how many people called from it, asked for directions, clicked through to your website, and saw it in Search and in Maps. Every figure is set against the period before, so you can see which way it moved.

Further down the same screen are the rank maps for each keyword, the competitor who does best against you, and the last twenty changes the product made to your profile.

On the first of every month a plain email goes to the business's main contact. It says how many changes were actually published, lists the new reviews with their average rating, names the things only the owner can do, and gives one sentence on rankings.

Why it matters

Most of the work on a Google profile is invisible to the person paying for it. A post goes up, a reply is posted, a photo is added, and none of it shows on its own. The Reports screen puts the work and the results side by side, measured by Google rather than by us.

Calls and direction requests are about as close to leads as a profile gets. Watching them next to the work being done is how an owner decides whether the service is worth keeping, and that is the test it ought to pass.

How it works

  1. Google counts the activity

Google records calls, direction requests, website clicks and views for every Business Profile. The product reads those counts through your connected account.

  2. You pick a period

Open Reports and choose 30 days, 3 months, 6 months or a year. Each figure shows the change against the previous stretch of the same length.

  3. Rank and competition sit alongside

The same screen carries the rank maps, your strongest competitor and a list of recently completed work, so the cause and the effect are in one place.

  4. The monthly summary arrives

On the first of the month the main contact gets a short written summary of the month's published work, new reviews and anything waiting on the owner.

  5. Keep a copy if you need one

Print the Reports screen, or save it as a PDF from your browser's print dialog.

What you do

Open the Reports screen. The monthly email is a summary, not the report: the figures, the maps and the trends live on the screen, and nothing emails them to you.

Keep the main contact up to date. The monthly email goes to one address, the business's primary email, so make sure it reaches someone who reads it.

Where it stops

  • It reports what Google records for the profile and nothing else. It can't tell you which calls turned into paying jobs.
  • The monthly email carries no charts, no rank numbers and no links. It's a short written summary; the numbers are on the Reports screen.
  • There's no scheduled or emailed PDF. A saved copy comes from your browser's print dialog.
  • The monthly email goes to a single address. Sending it to more people isn't supported yet.

Questions about reporting

Where do the numbers come from?

From Google. Calls, direction requests, website clicks and views are counts Google keeps for your Business Profile. The product reads them; it doesn't estimate or model them.

Does the report hide the months that went badly?

No. Every figure is shown for whatever period you choose, with the change against the previous period, in whichever direction it went.

Can I share the report with a business partner?

The monthly email goes to one address. For anything fuller, save the Reports screen as a PDF from your browser and send them that.

How far back can I look?

The screen shows the last 30 days, 3 months, 6 months or 12 months, each compared with the stretch of time before it.

Why doesn't the email show my rank maps?

It carries a single sentence on rankings. The maps need the Reports screen, where each keyword can be read point by point.
